The article explores Amy Tan’s use of ghosts and spirituality in her novel ‘The Bonesetter’s Daughter’. The author studies how the belief in ghosts functions in the novel as an alternative perspective through which to understand life, social relations, and the cosmos. The spirit of Gu Liu Xin, the Chinese grandmother, plays a critical role in developing the psychological integrity of Ruth Luyi Young, the American- born Chinese granddaughter. It also helps guide Lu Ling, Liu Xin’s daughter and Ruth’s mother, out of the hazardous situation in China and sustains Lu Ling in times of alienation and hardship in America. The article concludes that spirituality is essential for a subjugated woman character to achieve her personal and political freedom as well as her physical and spiritual wholeness.
The article is devoted to some of the teaching strategies based on the peculiarities of belles- lettres text. The author of the article analyses the peculiarities of the belles-lettres text which exert influence on the process of teaching reading skills and thus should be taken into account by foreign language teachers in their work with this type of text. The author argues that teaching belles-lettres reading skills should be centered on the five-level communication process between writer and reader. The teacher’s aim is to create or adjust a system of reading instruction within the five levels so that he/she could improve students’ reading skills.

The article regards the interrelation between language and consciousness, but with a special focus on the fact that consciousness is not only the tool and method of reflecting human existence or regulating human actions and relations, but it is as well a special device of evaluating the items and phenomena of real life. Consciousness is understood as a person’s world outlook. Society members create and get knowledge in the course of cognitive coactivity. Speech is considered to be one of the types of activity. Outwardly the images of consciousness that are figured in the course of activity are expressed with the help of language tools. The procedure of studying consciousness in psychology is described, in psychology consciousness is understood as a person’s image of the world, the connection between consciousness (or the image of the world) and the category of linguistic consciousness is traced, linguistic consciousness is thought to be an integral part of consciousness.
The article is devoted to interpretation of historical facts in Umberto Eco 's novel " Baudolino ". The subject of interpretation in the novel is medieval history, in particular , the reign of the emperor Frederick Barbarossa. Eco uses the typical for the historical novel method, which is the combination of facts from chronicles and fictional elements; the events are shown by the eyes of an invented character Baudolino. Emphasizing the connection between history and modernity, Eco proposes to revise the stereotypes associated with the mentioned historical period.
The article presents a sociocultural lingual description of ethnic labels created within rhyming slang (Rh.sl.) and used to refer to Europeans. The study and description of ethnic stereotypes and labels have attracted attention of researchers due to the practical significance in regulating, controlling and manipulating the direct contacts and interaction between different ethnic groups.
The authors have focused their attention on the so-called «hidden» or «implicit» forms of Rh.sl. Along with the explicit, direct, offensive and non-politically correct ethnic labels and nicknames there are quite a few with a deceptive, innocuous shape that conceals their offensive content. That’s why they should be perceived as potentially (if not indeed) offensive names. The authors put the ethnic labels produced in Rh.sl into this category.
Since the jurisprudence reflects relations between the institutions, bodies and organizations of the EU and native speakers, the EU Court of Justice plays a huge role in shaping the legal discourse. Relations between the EU and citizens show the effectiveness of the principle of multilingualism, that is apparent before the Court. The enlargement of the Union to 28 member States and, accordingly, the increase of the number of official languages to 24 complicate the implementation of the principle of multilingualism and create many problems for the EU Court of Justice: legal, linguistic, budget, translation.
The article deals with the phenomenon of idiomatic nominals with the incorporated object, which are English complex nouns of a definite concept structure. The author regards them as a result of conceptual blending. According to the modern linguistic theory (G. Fauconnier, M.Turner), conceptual blending is one of the basic operations of human cognition. It is involved in metaphorisation and metonimisation processes, in the formation of idiomatic lexical units and is an important element of noun incorporation.
Out of all the departments of political sciences in Russia –the Department at MGIMO- University is probably the oldest one. In fact it is very young. While MGIMO-University is celebrating its 70th anniversary the Department of Political Sciences turns 15. Despite the fact that political analyst is a relatively new profession in Russia, it acquired a legal standing only in the 1990s, the political science school at MGIMO-University is almost as old as the university itself. Unlike many other universities, focused on the training teachers of political science or campaign managers MGIMO- University has developed its own unique political science school of "full cycle", where students grow into political sciences from a zero level up to the highest qualifications as teachers and researchers, and campaign managers , consultants and practitioners.
In 1943, when the Department of International Relations at MSU was established to develop one year later into the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO), the first task of the faculty was to teach future diplomats of foreign languages, which they for the most part simply did not know. Of course, in the midst of World War II, the most important foreign language seemed to be German. But the question was in providing for language support for the system of world diplomacy of the Soviet state. And pretty soon it became clear that proficiency in two foreign languages was the main advantage of MGIMO graduates over graduates of all other national universities. The language study at MGIMO is of applied nature: while studying languages students at the same time receive other professions – a diplomat, an economist, a lawyer, a journalist.
